Recent Events

The alumni profiled here came back to campus for the Student/Alumni Networking Event for English and Communication Students which was held on Wednesday, December 1, 2010. A total of 21 alumni participated, and approximately 40 undergraduates took advantage of the opportunity to learn about graduate school and career options.

Kelley Brackett, Public Communication Specialist

Kelley Brackett

Kelley Brackett is a 2010 graduate of NC State University in communications with a minor in journalism. Kelley returned to her alma mater in June to work as a public communications specialist for University Dining and Catering Operations. With over twenty dining locations on campus, Kelley spends her time marketing University Dining to NC State students, faculty and staff. In October, Kelley was charged with marketing the "Chancellor's Ice Cream Dream" as part of Chancellor Woodson's Installation. The event was a success with over 2,000 people sampling the new chancellor's signature flavor!

 

Stacey Bigliardi, MFA Student

Stacey Bigliardi

I earned a BA in Western Literature at NCSU in 2007. I have published several short stories and poems, and in the past I have worked as a teacher, a freelance editor and proofreader, and as an editor for a small literary magazine. I live with my two children in Garner, and I am currently completing a novel.

 

Matthew Bruchon, Software Developer

Matthew Bruchon

Matthew Bruchon graduated from NC State in 2008 with a BA in Language, Writing and Rhetoric and dual BS degrees in Computer and Electrical Engineering. Through the English Department, he interned at the College of Management, which gave him experience in marketing and web interface design. Since 2009, Matthew has worked as a Software Developer at Applied Research Associates. Aside from writing software, his responsibilities include designing user interfaces, preparing marketing materials, and presenting designs to customers.

 

Desiree Wilkinson Burns, MS Student

Desiree Wilkinson Burns

Desiree Wilkinson Burns graduated from NC State in 2007 with a degree in English education. She taught high school English in Raleigh for two years before deciding to come back to NCSU for her master's degree. She is currently a master's student in Technical Communication. She lives in the Triangle with her husband and three cats.

Heidi Collins, Manager of Operations

Heidi Collins

Heidi Collins is the Manager of Operations at Bennett Aerospace, which is located in Cary, NC. She is responsible for the development of bids and proposals, technical communications and marketing. She holds a BA in English and a MS in Technical Communication from NCSU. 

Ms. Collins has eight years of experience in journalism, marketing and technical communication. She previously wrote for WRAL Channel 5, Technician, The Ensign and Americana; developed business documentation for Nortel Networks and Wabtec Passenger Transit; and created marketing communications for industrial clients of Shorey & Associates. She has also ghost written technical articles for a broad range of industry-specific publications, including Mechanical Engineering, Parking Today and Retail Construction.

Tara Croft, Copy Editor

Tara Croft

Tara graduated from NCSU in 2007 with a BA in English and minor in Technical and Scientific Communication. She began as an editorial intern with the full-service communications firm S&A Cherokee and became copy editor upon graduation. Tara edits all publications produced and contracted by S&A Cherokee, including Cary Magazine, Triangle East, Auto Remarketing, SubPrime Auto Finance News, Farm Bureau magazine, numerous e-newsletters and more. Tara also writes for Cary Magazine and Triangle East.

 

Landra Cunningham, Technical Writer

Landra Cunningham

Landra Cunningham has been a technical writer at SAS Institute Inc. in the Management Information Systems (MIS) department since 2006. In addition to her technical communication responsibilities, she is also a project manager, responsible for the delivery of IT projects. She began working at SAS in 2004 as a student employee providing technical writing support for MIS. Upon completion of the M.S. Technical Communication, she became a full-time technical writer. She received a B.A. in Communication (Public Relations concentration) with a minor in Technical and Scientific Communication at North Carolina State University in 2003.

 

Mark Daniel, Technical Writer/Editor

Mark Daniel

Mark Daniel graduated from NC State in 2009, with degrees in English Language, Writing and Rhetoric and Spanish Language and Literature. He returned to NC State later that year as a student in the Master of Science in Technical Communication program. He is on pace to complete his Master's Degree in December 2011. Since January 2010, he has also worked as a Marketing and Technical Writer/Editor Co-op for IBM Design Source.

 

Amanda Faber, Publishing Coordinator

 

Amanda Faber graduated from NCSU with a degree in English and a minor in Linguistics. She interned with Boson Books and was then hired to do some contract work. This experience provided an immeasurable amount of insight into what it takes to publish a book.

Amanda is currently working at Ivy House Publishing Group as the Publishing Coordinator. From the initial "I've written the next great American novel. What do I do now?" phone call to marketing that same book months down the line, she has her hands in just about everything. Her favorite part is still the editing, but it's very rewarding and exciting to play a part in every step along the way for local, mostly first-time authors.

 

Eric Genesky, MA Student

 

Eric Genesky received his BA in English from NCSU in 2008. He taught at Monroe High School in Union County before coming back to NCSU to earn his MA in English.

 

Brenna Leath, Master's Candidate and Teaching Assistant

Brenna Leath

Brenna Leath graduated Summa Cum Laude from NCSU in December of 2008, earning her BA in Language, Writing, and Rhetoric with a minor in Film Studies. Her Honors Independent Study, “The Virtual Workplace: How Working Online Can Work For You” won Honorable Mention at NCSU’s Undergraduate Research Symposium in Spring of 2008, and was published in Volume 6 of Young Scholars in Writing. After working as a loan officer at NCSECU for a year and a half, Brenna was awarded a teaching assistantship at NCSU, and is currently pursuing her Master’s in English with a concentration in Film Studies.

 

E-Ching Lee, Science Writer/Editor

E-Ching Lee

E-Ching writes and edits for North Carolina Sea Grant's Coastwatch magazine and the program's website, www.ncseagrant.org. She collaborates with the Sea Grant staff and researchers on a variety of news and feature stories that explain timely topics for coastal communities and ecosystems. She also develops print and electronic outreach products for a wide variety of audiences. From 2007 to 2010, she was an editor at RTI International in Research Triangle Park, where she worked on international development proposals and projects. Her contributions earned multiple awards from RTI.Ms. Lee holds an MS in Technical Communication (from NCSU), as well as a master’s in computer science.

 

Maria Martinat, Public Relations Account Coordinator

Maria Martinat

Originally from a small town in the mountains of North Carolina, Maria is a soft-spoken Southern girl who loves everything pink. But she also has a rough and tough side -- Maria enjoys hiking, rock climbing and everything about the outdoors.

Maria graduated from NC State University (GO PACK!) in May of 2010. She interned with the agency one summer, and is now enjoying her first "real" job as a Public Relations Account Coordinator at Howard, Merrell & Partners.

 

Jen Riehle, NCSU Web Designer and Outreach Coordinator

Jen Riehle

Jen earned a B.S. in Textile Business Management in the spring of 2005 and now works as a Web Designer and Outreach Coordinator for the NC State University Office of Information Technology. She returned to classes in 2006 and is currently working towards her M.S. in Technical Communication.

 

Irecka Smith, Master's Student

Irecka Smith

A state alumni that can't get enough, Irecka Smith graduated with a  BA in English and minor in Journalism from NCSU in 2007. She worked  as a writer and editor for Business Leader Magazine for a year before launching the independent writing company, Writers Anonimous. She has since returned to NCSU for her masters. As a second year master's student in Adult and Continuing Education, Smith is an intern writer for the College of Engineering and the FREEDM's System Center.

 

Roy Stamper, NCSU English Lecturer

Roy Stamper

After receiving the BA in English / English education at NCSU, Roy taught in a number of North Carolina's public school systems. He later returned to NCSU and completed the MA in English before joining the faculty of the Department of English. Roy is currently a Senior Lecturer in English. He regularly teaches first-year writing courses, as well as courses in the study of literature.

 

Linda Watson, Cook and Researcher

Linda Watson

Linda Watson is the chief cook and researcher for Cook for Good, where she helps people save money, eat well, and make a difference by eating delicious, seasonal food cooked from scratch for less than the food-stamp allowance. Cook for Good also raises money and awareness for anti-hunger, pro-environment groups through donations, events, and video support. Linda has taught cooking classes in seven states and appears in Cook for Good videos on YouTube. In the spring of 2011, Da Capo Press will publish her book, Wildly Affordable Organic. Linda credits her English degree from NCSU for providing the foundation for her career that also includes writing manuals, managing projects, developing computer games, running a dot-com, and riding herd on a political organization.

 

Lindsay York, MA Student

Lindsay York

I graduated from NCSU in May 2010 with a BA in English Language and Literature (LAN) and a minor in Women's and Gender Studies (WGS). As an undergrad, I transferred to NCSU after attending both East Carolina University and Alamance Community College. Presently, I'm a first-year MA student, with an overall concentration in American and British Literature and a smaller research focus on women writers and feminist theory. For three years, I have worked as a tutor with the Athletic Support Program for Athletes, and also currently work as a grading assistant for ENG 266.

 

Morgan Young, E-Learning Developer

Morgan Young

I graduated from North Carolina State University in 2008 with a BA in English, Language, Writing and Rhetoric and a BA in French, Language and Literature. I currently work for the State Employees' Credit Union as an E-Learning Developer. Since graduating I've been working on my Graduate Certificate in E-Learning offered by NC State. My English degree has been a valuable asset in my work with online learning and my time as an intern with the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NCCASA) provided me with relevant work experience.
