How to Find Us - Location
The NC State English Department is located in Tompkins Hall, one of NC State University's most historic buildings (follow this link for a history of Tompkins Hall). Part of North Campus, it faces Hillsborough Street, a major thoroughfare running from past the State Fairgrounds to the State Capitol; Tompkins Hall is near the Belltower, the University landmark on Hillsborough.
Driving Directions
If you are driving from:
The Northeast (e.g. Washington DC, Richmond VA):
- Follow I-85 South to Henderson NC, where it merges with U.S. 1.
- Follow U.S. 1 South into Raleigh, where it intersects with I-440.
- Follow 1-440 (you'll be turning to your right off U.S. 1) until the Hillsborough Street Exit (Exit #3).
The South (e.g. Columbia SC):
- Follow 1-95 North to Benson NC, where it intersects with 1-40.
- Follow I-40 West to Raleigh, where it intersects with 1-440.
- Follow the 1-440 Beltline until the Hillsborough Street Exit.
The Southwest (e.g. Charlotte NC):
- Follow 1-85 North to Greensboro NC, where it merges with 1-40.
- Follow 1-40 East to Raleigh, where it intersects with 1-440.
- Follow the 1-440 Beltline until the Hillsborough Street Exit (Exit #3).
The West (e.g. Knoxville TN):
- Follow 1-40 East to Raleigh, where it intersects with 1-440.
- Follow the 1-440 Beltline until the Hillsborough Street Exit (Exit #3).
The Southeast (e.g. Wilmington NC):
- Follow 1-40 West to Raleigh, where it intersects with 1-440.
- Follow the 1-440 Beltline until the Hillsborough Street Exit (Exit #3).
The Northeast (e.g. Outer Banks NC):
- Follow U.S. 64 West to Raleigh, where it intersects with 1-440.
- Follow the 1-440 Beltline until the Hillsborough Street Exit (Exit #3).
Visitor Parking
The Visitor's Lot on North Campus is the Riddick Lot.
To get to Riddick,
- Follow Hillsborough Street to Pullen Drive (this road separates the Belltower and Tompkins Hall).
- Take Pullen Drive to the roundabout (traffic circle).
- Take the first exit off the roundabout and go down the hill to the right hand side of the tollbooth.
- Ask for a visiting parking ticket.
- Then take a sharp left to the Riddick Lot entrance.
To get to Tompkins on foot from Riddick,
- Head back the way you just came.
- Cross the street in front of the booth and proceed across the grass quadrangle to Tompkins Hall.
There are two groundfloor entrances from the quadrangle side, one on either end of the building.
There is also metered parking on Hillsborough Street in front of Tompkins, but these spaces are usually filled by students.
