Biography

I have been a professional writer for more than 25 years, and I have been teaching people to write for more than 20 years, through formal classes, workshops, and one-on-one corporate training sessions.

I earned my BA degree in English, with concentrations in writing/editing and wildlife sciences, from North Carolina State University in 1988. My sophomore year at NC State, I took a course in technical writing and liked it so much that I took a detour from my plan to become a novelist and embarked upon a lengthy technical writing career. I worked extensively with engineers and scientists. After graduating, I continued to work as a technical/business writer and science journalist.

I later returned to NC State to earn an M.S. degree in Technical Communication. During graduate school, I was offered a teaching assistantship, and I have been teaching ever since. This is my 18th year teaching undergraduate-level technical and business communications at North Carolina State University. I also lead workshops and teach a graduate-level course, "Communication for Public Managers," for the Master of Public Administration program at State.
