Departmental Resources
Computers
The CHASS Computing Lab-Tompkins is located in Tompkins 113A and is available for use by any student. The lab is open every weekday, most evenings, and some hours each weekend during the semester. Lab director Bob Kadle and his lab assistants are available during lab hours to answer questions concerning the computers and the use of the software programs in both the lab and the computing classrooms. http://hclabs.chass.ncsu.edu/
In addition, there are six computer classrooms in Tompkins Hall, each of which is equipped with 22 student computers and a faculty computer connected to a projector.
All of the computers in the lab and the classrooms run current versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, several web browsers, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Photoshop, Flash, and InDesign.
Of particular interest to graduate students are the many online databases networked through D. H. Hill library.
Travel Funds
The Department of English encourages graduate students to participate actively in professional meetings such as the South Atlantic Modern Language Association, the Philological Association of the Carolinas, the Southeastern Renaissance Conference, the Conference on College Composition and Communication, and the Modern Language Association, among others. Graduate students who are selected to present papers at professional meetings may request consideration for travel funds from the English Department; consult the DGP. Recently, MA students have presented work at the Faulkner Conference in Oxford, Mississippi; a graduate student conference at University of South Carolina; an international conference on Henry James, in Hawaii; at the South Atlantic branch of the Modern Language Association; at the NWAV Linguistics conference in Raleigh; and at the College Composition Conferences.
