After the Master's Degree
Further Study
The master's program from NCSU may transfer as a block to satisfy the MA requirement within a PhD program at another university, and it will prepare you for the significant independent research and writing required in any doctoral program. Flyers sent out by graduate English departments will be posted on the graduate bulletin board. Consult these and many other online resources for programs that might suit you. In addition, consult members of our faculty about departments that are strong in the area you want to specialize in and that have faculty you might want to work with.
Keep the DGP informed of your career goals. The Director can suggest faculty who are nationally connected in the fields of your interest. PhD programs demand high GRE scores and strong letters of recommendation. By the end of your first year, you should have made a decision about further study, collected information about programs, and begun to line up your letters of recommendation from NCSU faculty.
Career Possibilities
Our MA graduates find teaching positions in community colleges, junior colleges, high schools, and sometimes in four-year colleges and universities, though appointments at the latter institutions usually require a PhD. Those who hope to make a career of teaching at the senior college level go on for the PhD. Some graduates have found positions in editing, journalism, state government and business, publishing, and various Internet technology positions.
