The Foreign Language Requirement

A reading knowledge of one foreign language is required. This requirement can be fulfilled in a number of ways:

  1. By taking a reading exam administered by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. These exams are offered at various times during the semester. Most students prepare for the exam by taking one of the FL_ 401 courses (FLS [Spanish] 401, FLF [French], FLG [German]). These courses assume no previous knowledge of the language and offer no credit toward the degree (though the hours do count as registration hours). They concentrate exclusively on reading and translating.
  2. By enrolling in and passing with a C- or better a 300-400 level foreign language course taught in the language (not in translation).
  3. By having an undergraduate major or minor in a foreign language within the past five years.

NB: You must have passed your foreign language requirement before you can participate in the capstone symposium and receive a passing grade in ENG 676.
