Getting News and Information
Mailboxes
Each MA student will be assigned a mailbox at the entrance to the lounge on the second floor of Tompkins. Mailboxes should be checked several times a week for department and university information, returned papers, and other correspondence.
Every tuition-paying student at NCSU is automatically issued a UNITY computing account on the UNIX mainframe. For information visit the Computing Services homepage, or call 515-HELP.
Email Distribution List (Listserv)
The primary means of conveying important information and announcements of deadlines from the Director of Graduate Programs (DGP) to MA students is the "maeng" listserv. All communication from this listserv is sent ONLY to the official email address given to students by the university. MA students should therefore check their NCSU email accounts on a regular basis.
Computers
The Department tries to provide online computers to TAs assigned to cubicles in Tompkins, 2nd floor, but does not have enough hardware or network outlets to offer online computers to those who are not TAs. Cubicles with computers are typically located within 20 feet of the network RJ45 jacks. However, not all cubicles are close enough to make putting them online feasible. All online computers in the cubicles are configured for multiple users.
For more computer access, see the Humanities Computing laboratories, where the PCs are more recent and the software more current than in some of the cubicle computers maintained by the English department. These labs are in Tompkins 113, primarily PCs, and Winston 118, Mac lab. Their home page is: http://hclabs.chass.ncsu.edu/
Bulletin Boards
Message boards are located on the second floor of Tompkins. Notices of job opportunities, conferences, calls for papers, and flyers from graduate schools will be posted there, as well as current happenings in the department and on campus.
Telephones
TAs will be assigned to shared telephones for (on-campus and local calls only) near the cubicles in the middle of the second floor of Tompkins. (919) 515-3357 and 515-3394
