Special Program Options for the MA

Directed Readings (Independent Study): ENG 636

ENG 636 is directed study covering material not available to students in our current offerings. The course is available only to students registered full-time or part-time in our graduate program. Such a course should be as intellectually demanding and as rigorous as any regularly scheduled graduate course in the department. At the discretion of the DGP, an approved ENG 636 may fulfill graduate elective course requirements. However, no more than three hours of ENG 636 may be used to fulfill distribution requirements, and no more than six hours of ENG 636 may be used overall. Directed readings are taken for S/U (credit/no credit) rather than for a letter grade. To apply for ENG 636, submit the following information to the DGP before the end of the pre-registration period for the semester of independent study:

  • a completed ENG 636 Directed Readings form, available from the Graduate Secretary. This form requires the signatures of the course instructor and the DGP.
  • a syllabus and plan for required work for the class

Register for ENG 636 by turning in the required materials to the Graduate Secretary. At the conclusion of the course, a copy of the paper must be filed with the DGP.

Please bear in mind that any ENG 636 class represents an overload for the professor willing to offer one.

Interinstitutional Registration

NCSU MA students may take graduate classes for credit at the following institutions approved for interinstitutional registration: UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, and UNC-Greensboro.

Students register for all such classes via the NCSU Registration and Records Office, not at the institution where the class is taught. These graduate credits are accepted directly and the grades appear on the NCSU graduate transcript.

Such courses are considered by the Graduate School to be a part of the student's normal load and the student will be billed for the courses through the NCSU Cashier's Office. During the summer, the procedure is somewhat different in that a student must be enrolled in at least one course on the NCSU campus during the same session as the requested interinstitutional registration.

When the grading system of the other institutions varies from that of NCSU, grades received under interinstitutional registration will be converted to the NCSU system. "H," "P," "L," and "F" grades earned at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and "E," "G," "S" and "F" grades earned at Duke University will be converted to "A," "B," "C" and "F" grades, respectively.

Classes at Meredith and Cooperating Raleigh Colleges

Any NCSU graduate degree student who is enrolled in at least three graduate credit hours on the NCSU campus may take a course at Meredith College during fall or spring semester, provided the course is not taught on the NCSU campus, and the advisor considers the course educationally desirable.

NCSU students may not register for more than a total of two courses in any semester at Meredith, and not more than six of the required academic credits for a master's degree at NCSU may be accepted from that institution. Grades from Meredith are not used in computing a student's NCSU grade point average.

Under this agreement, regular tuition and fees are paid to NCSU. Special fees may be required for specific courses at Meredith, and the student is responsible for paying these fees.
