Master of Arts in English
We offer the MA in English with five concentrations representing distinctive dimensions of this evolving discipline: American and British Literature, World Literature, Linguistics, Rhetoric and Composition, and Film Studies. United by a common emphasis on research and critical thinking, the five options offer diverse perspectives and methods for exploring culture and language in myriad forms and circumstances.
Graduates of our MA program have varied goals and interests: some go on for advanced work in PhD programs leading to college and university teaching. Others pursue secondary school and community college teaching, and some find employment as writers and editors.
Our chief form of financial support is the Teaching Assistantship. Each year, approximately 12-15 two-year assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis to the incoming class of MA students. These awards come with remission of tuition, an annual stipend of $9,000, and health insurance.
See menu on right for more information on our MA concentrations, the Teaching Assistantship, and the application process.
