Master of Arts in English
Welcome
The NCSU English Department offers the MA with five distinct concentrations: American and British literature, world literature, linguistics, rhetoric and composition, and film studies. Although each concentration has its own particular focus, they are united by a common emphasis on research and original thinking. In addition, the various concentrations are structured as components of an evolving program that values equally the study of culture and mass media, language and rhetoric, literature and literary theory, creative writing, and film.
Graduates of our MA program have varied goals and interests: some go on for advanced work in PhD programs leading to college and university teaching. Others pursue secondary school and community college teaching, and some find employment as writers and editors.
Our chief form of financial support is the Teaching Assistantship. Each year, approximately 12-15 two-year assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis to the incoming class of MA students. These awards come with remission of tuition, an annual stipend of $9,000, and health insurance.
This website offers information our MA concentrations, our faculty, the Teaching Assistantship, and the application process.
