Welcome to the Concentration in Rhetoric and Composition!

North Carolina State University's Master of Arts in English offers a concentration in Rhetoric and Composition that provides focused study of writing, the teaching of writing, and the role of persuasive language in academic disciplines, civic life, and our culture at large. The concentration offers a flexible curriculum and nationally recognized faculty. It provides a firm theoretical foundation in both composition and rhetoric, while offering opportunities to study such areas of interest as:

  • Writing and new media
  • Writing across the curriculum
  • History of rhetoric
  • Sociolinguistics
  • Genre studies
  • Professional writing
  • Feminist rhetoric

The program offers excellent opportunities to gain practical experience in teaching, research, instructional technologies, and writing and speaking across the curriculum, under the mentorship of an active faculty.

Rhetoric and Composition are lively and growing areas of English studies, contributing research and critical understanding of the role of writing in the classroom, in business organizations, and in society. Graduates of the Rhetoric and Composition concentration at NC State University have gone on to work as practical communicators in industry, teach at all levels of education, and pursue doctoral degrees in this field. In fact, the field of Rhetoric and Composition now represents approximately one-fourth of the faculty positions in English departments listed by the Modern Language Association each year in its academic Job List.
