The Sand Man

The sand, the sand, it swallowed you: to where?                      a

A hole, a gap, of black and blue that masks                             b

the shadow's clear, bright light: the light of there.                      a

In flashing from the distant view, a path                                    b

of death and bloody red. You feel secure                                c

a dirty word that shows the lie; he laughs.                                b

A bite, a bite, the worm is meat to catch:                                 d

a life, a fish, a meal to steal, a lie.                                             e

Two lives at once, a stone to throw, a whore               c

to fetch the hooked. Sleep sleep you bloody wretch:    d

at least to die with cause and dream. A meal                            e

of sand, you'll fall asleep, a peaceful rest                                  d

indeed ; he pushed and shoved the bullet through.                    f

Through pirate, thief, life, death, and harbored youth.   f
