NC Writers Issue Events

Follow some of North Carolina's best writers featured in Obsidian's North Carolina Writers Double Issue at events below:

Celebrate North Carolina's rich heritage and culture at the 11th Annual African American Cultural Celebration. Join us in celebrating Literature and Spoken Word with Lenard Moore and some members of the African American Writers' Collective (AAWC). Also celebrate storytelling by Linda Beatrice Brown. Don't miss Shirlette Ammons as she opens the evening's event, "Roots to Rap": a musical conversation led by Pierce Freelon and jazz quartet, The Beast. Be a part of Obsidian history as we launch the Obsidian 2012 Reading Series with the NC Writers Cafe Reading. Through the collaboration of Obsidian and the African American Cultural Center, the NC Writers Cafe Reading will feature Literature and Spoken Word by some of North Carolina's best writers.

  • Fiction Writers: Tracie Fellers, Makuchi (Dr. Juliana Nfah-Abbenyi), and Sheila Smith McKoy.
  • Poets: Anjail Rashida Ahmad, L. Teresa Church, celeste doaks, Lenard D. Moore, Crystal Simone Smith, and Darrell "SCIPOET" Stover.

Obsidian will also be featuring finalists from its "Straight to the Mic" Spoken Word Competition. Come cast your vote for the winner.

Can't get enough of fiction/story telling, then join Dr. Anjail Ahmad at NC A&T's Carolina on My Mind Reading Series. This Historic event will feature some of the best of North Carolina’s Black fiction, nonfiction writers and storytellers working and performing in the genre today. Doors open at 7 pm. This event is Free and open to the public.
