English Major with a Concentration in Creative Writing

This concentration focuses on creative writing in several genres, including fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and screenwriting. Students take a range of courses in English studies as well as intensive writing workshops that enable writers to hone their modes of expression and develop creative approaches to written expression.

LCW MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
ENGLISH MAJOR CORE REQUIREMENTS (18 hours)
1. American Literature (3 hrs)
2. British Literature (3 hrs)
3. World Literature (3 hrs)
4. Film (3 hrs)
5. Linguistics (3 hrs)
6. Rhetoric (3 hrs)
LCW CONCENTRATION REQUIREMENTS (21 hours)
1. LCW Electives (9 hrs)
2. LCW Advanced Electives (3 hrs)
3. Literature Electives (6 hours)—scroll to bottom of list for lower level lit courses
4. English Electives (3 hours)
RESTRICTIONS (entering Fall 2010 and later)
--students may take no more than five 200-level courses in the major
--at least one course in LCW electives (first category under concentration requirements) must be taken at the 300 or 400 level
- all courses, except ENG 350, must be taken for a letter grade to satisfy department requirements
--although some courses are listed in more than one category, no course may satisfy more than one requirement
--students must earn a C- or better for a course to count toward major requirements
--the minimum GPA to graduate is 2.0
--30 of your last 45 hours of coursework must be taken at NC State
--The Associate Head will approve the following courses to satisfy a major requirement only when the content is appropriate to the requirement: ENG 394, ENG 420, ENG 460, ENG 491, ENG 539, FL 495.

7. World Literature (3 hours)
LCW students must also complete the LCW concentration.

--the maximum number of 200 level courses within the English major (2009) is 4
--all courses, except ENG 350, must be taken for a letter grade to satisfy department requirements

--the minimum GPA to graduate is 2.0
