Creative Writing (LCW)

The LCW curriculum offers a background in literature and language with an emphasis on writing poetry, fiction, screenplays, and/or non-fiction.
In addition to meeting the CHASS, Free Elective, and GEP Requirements (see CHASS BA and GEP (097) Requirements), students in the LCW curriculum must satisfy the following requirements in the major.

- All courses satisfying Department Requirements, except ENG 350, must be taken for a letter grade.
- Students must earn at least a C- for courses to count towards their major.
- 200-Level Courses: Students may take no more than four 200-level classes in the major.
- At least one of the Creative Writing Restricted Electives must be taken at the 300 or 400 level.
- Either Literature I or Literature II must be taken at the 200 level.
- Literature before 1800, Literature after 1800, and Author or Genre must be taken at the 300 level or above.
English-related minors available to LCW majors:
- Film Studies
- Journalism
- Linguistics
- Technical and Scientific Communication
- American Literature
- World Literature.
One course--and only one--can be counted in both the major and any minor.
The following courses can satisfy a requirement only when the content is appropriate to that requirement: ENG 394, ENG 420, ENG 460, ENG 491, ENG 497, ENG 539, FL 495. See your adviser or the Director of Advising.
Recommendations: For the Linguistics, Rhetoric or Writing Practice requirement (GRP 446), we recommend that students take either ENG 422 or ENG 426.
