LIT: World Literature Option in English

The Lawrence Rudner Option in World Literature enables students to achieve a fully rounded education in literature by mixing courses in English and American literature with courses in foreign-language literatures. Each student must take at least 18 hours of courses in ENG and at least 12 hours of courses in FL (including CL, GRK, and LAT) among the 36 hours for the LIT major. A student may count cross-listed ENG/FL courses (in translation) as part of the 18 hours in ENG or as part of the 12 hours in FL. LIT students must take at least one 200-level literature course. They may use no more than 12 hours of 200-level courses to satisfy the following requirements:

This option is built around core requirements (33 hours), which allow students to choose from a variety of courses in ten of the eleven categories. The core consists of:

--A course in Rhetoric, Linguistics, or Writing Practice
--A second course in a second field among Rhetoric, Linguistics, and Writing Practices
--A course that includes Ancient Literature
--A course that includes Medieval Literature
--A course that includes Renaissance or Baroque Literature
--A course that includes 18th- or 19th Century Literature
--A course that includes 20th or 21st Century Literature
--A course in the Literature of the Americas
--A course in African or Asian Literature
--A course in a genre or major author
--An advanced course in comparative literature that extends across at least two different   cultures
--An elective course in literature

For specific courses that fulfill these requirements, please refer to the LIT curriculum guide on the NCSU English site.

Students also take 30 hours of Free Electives.

Minor in World Literature

In keeping with the University's mission to provide an international curriculum, the world literature minor offers students (except those in the LAN and LIT curricula) an opportunity to broaden their perspectives on foreign cultures through the study of literature outside of the Anglo-American tradition. Students will also develop critical, analytical, and linguistic skills essential in today's job market. The minor offers choices from a broad range of courses in literature, in translation or in the original language, from Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. World Literature courses are cross-listed in the Department of English and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.

Requirements: Proficiency in foreign language at the FL 202, LAT 202, GRK 202 or above, and fifteen credit hours, distributed as follows, are
required for the minor:

1.) Two courses in World Literature: (FL/ENG 221, 222, 223, 224). One of these courses must be pre-twentieth century (FL/ENG 221 or 222).

2.) Two courses in Special Topics in World Literature (FL/ENG 394), or Seminar in Literary Criticism (ENG 496).

3.) Any 300- or 400-level literature course outside of the student's major; or FL/ENG 539 with permission of instructor.
