Submit Your Poems to the 2017 NC State Poetry Contest

The NC State creative writing program is accepting entries to its annual statewide writing contest. Open to all North Carolina residents, the contest is one of the largest free literary competitions in the Southeast and drew more than 600 entrants last year.

Upcoming: Pulitzer Poet Yusef Komunyakaa

Pulitzer Prize winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa served as this year’s final judge for the NC State Poetry Contest. The contest — considered one of the largest free poetry contests in the southeast — yielded 636 entries this year. When Komunyakaa visits NC State on April 6-7, he will announce the contest winners, visit with students and hold a public reading of his own poetry.

Poet’s First Book of Verse Wins Prize

NC State MFA alumna Noel Crook has achieved what felt like an unattainable dream: She is a poet, and a prize-winning one at that. Crook won the Crab Orchard Review First Book Award, a national prize providing up-and-coming poets with the opportunity to publish their first book. Crook, who earned her MFA in creative writing from NC State in 2008, gave her $2,500 prize money to NC State to support the MFA program, telling the university’s development office there wouldn’t be a book without John Balaban, the university’s emeritus poet-in-residence.
