Why did you select CHASS?
I have always been interested in art and humanities, critical reading and writing skills, and personal communication. It is a strong college, and the English Department produces great teachers. Professors Jeffrey Reaser, John Wall, and Sid Johnson, for example, have been excellent instructors and mentors.
What do you enjoy most about CHASS?
My classes have really encouraged critical thinking. I am not simply given information to learn and memorize, but we work through issues as a class. Especially in courses such as Language & Gender and Social Deviance, where topics can be sensitive, you get to explore new ideas and experiment in a safe way with your teacher and peers.
What new doors has college opened for you?
College has been a period of great exploration and experimentation. I have seen this time as one where I can test out my interests in things such as music, journalism, and study abroad. My classes also helped guide my selection of teacher education as a major, stimulating my interest in the field.
What advice would you give incoming students?
Get to know your professors. I didn’t do that early on, but I wish I had. Your instructors can teach you better if they know you as more than just a face in their class, and they are more willing to work with you and offer assistance because you have more of a relationship. Also, everyone says you should get involved, but it is true. Take time to find and develop your interests outside of class.
