Event Spotlight: Dufresne & The Voices of Our People

The Voices of Our People event was a success! So much kudos and hugs to our MA graduate student, Kelsey Virginia Downs Dufresne, for putting this all together. This event was open to the community and it had such a great turnout!

 

  

The Voices of Our People event was made possible through the partnering of the Literacy and Community Initiative, NC State University Libraries, the Multicultural Student Affairs Office, Juntos NC, and Bull City YouthBuild. Most importantly this event was made possible due to the student authors behind the Voices of Our People: Nuestras Verdades and See the Shadows Through the Broken Pieces. This reading event was held to celebrate the writings of the authors from the Juntos Hispanic Literacy Group and the student authors of Bull City YouthBuild, as well as to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month and to empower Latinx voices here at NC State University and in our community.  

 

 

The authors shared their pieces with students and scholars from NC State in the form of autoethnographies, poems, and memoirs. After sharing their writing, the authors also spoke of their experiences as Hispanics in Durham and Garner, North Carolina, the sacrifices of their families, and how they strive to use their voices to pave a better path for future generations – while also knowing that they use their voices because there are many that cannot. 

 

 

The latest book written by Juntos HLG is now available on Amazon, and the next book to be authored by Bull City YouthBuild will be published and be available on Amazon this month!
