Faculty Notes for February 2023

CHRIS ANSON

On February 16 at the Conference on College Composition and Communication in Chicago, Chris Anson spoke on a panel on the ethics of text recycling (when academics re-use all or parts of previous publications in further publications).

Anson gave a paper titled “The T-Unit on Trial: Prosecutorial Evidence from a Sample Study” on February 20 at the 7th Writing Research Across Borders Conference in Trondheim, Norway and spoke in a roundtable on the influence of digital technology on writing processes. At the end of the conference, he assumed the role of chair of the organization that sponsors the WRAB conference, the International Society for the Advancement of Writing Research, a position he will hold for three years.

Paul Fyfe presented a set of workshops on artificial intelligence, text generation, and pedagogy at Furman University and for NC State’s Office of Faculty Excellence conversation series. He was interviewed about ChatGPT on WRAL, NBC, the Scripps Network, Inside Higher Ed, and the Future Tense program/podcast on Australian public radio.

Marsha Gordon published “Gauging Film History: An Exquisite Corpse,” with Ina Archer, Dino Everett, and Martin Johnson, in Framework 63 (Spring/Fall 2022).

Chelsea Krieg’s poem “Self-Portrait as Mother as Nature Documentary” was published in Gulf Coast‘s 35.2 Winter/Spring 2023 Online Exclusives issue. 

On February 16, Carolyn Miller presented “Present at the Creation: Rhetoric at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, 1889–1900” at the Conference on College Composition and Communication in Chicago. Others on this panel on the Role of Rhetoric in Early Engineering Education presented on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, MIT, and Purdue. 

Miller published “Genre Formation and Differentiation in New Media” in Writing as a Human Activity: Implications and Applications of the Work of Charles Bazerman (University Press of Colorado, 2023). 

On January 10, Miller made a Zoom guest appearance in Jennifer Grouling’s graduate class on Contemporary Composition at Ball State University, to discuss kairos in research and scholarship. Grouling received her MA degree from our department in 2005, when she was known as Jennifer Cover.

Never-before-seen film of MLK speaking at NC State while the KKK protested was featured on WRAL TVand in The Technician.

With singer Sandra Dubose and NC Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green, Jason Miller presented “Backlash Blues: Nina Simone and Langston Hughes” at the North Carolina Museum of Art as the museum’s first sold out event since early 2020. As a follow up, he spoke with WRAL about the event and “Nina Simone’s Legacy.”

On February 17, Laura Waldrep presented “Knock, Knock: Building a Community of Care Through Humor” at Virginia Tech’s Conference on Higher Education Pedagogy.
