CHRIS ANSON

In July, Chris Anson presented the findings of his survey research on students’ reuse of their own writing at the annual conference of the Council of Writing Program Administrators in Reno, Nevada.

Anson and co-editor Pamela Flash received from the Council of Writing Program Administrators their second Best Book award for Writing-Enriched Curricula: Models of Faculty-Driven and Departmental Transformation.

PAUL COLBY

Paul Colby’s short story “Declaration of Independence” was published July 1 by the Dead Mule School of Southern Literature

DAUN DAEMON

In July, Daun Daemon’s debut book of poetry, A Prayer for Forgiving My Parents, was published by Kelsay Books. The book is available on Amazon.

On August 6, Salvation South republished Daemon’s short story “The Interview.”

PAUL FYFE

Students in Paul Fyfe’s Maymester course ENG 376 Science Fiction: Humans, Machines, and In-betweens enjoyed several collaborations with the NC State University Library, including zine making and using generative AI to create illustrations and text for their final projects. Read more here:

An exhibition of the class’s work is currently on display in the Innovation Studio in DH Hill Library.

Along with Thomas Smits and Ben Lee, Fyfe was a contributing author (in absentia) to “Distant Viewing the Illustrated London News,” presented at the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations conference in Graz, Austria.

MARSHA GORDON

Marsha Gordon published “Why have you read ‘The Great Gatsby’ but not Ursula Parrott’s ‘Ex-Wife’?” on August 23 in The Conversation; “Women on the Verge: The Jazz Age Origins of Burnout” in Literary Hub on July 5; and “The Smallest Camera of All: 3mm” and “The Edison Home Kinetoscope,” co-authored with Dino Everett, in Tales from the Vaults (Technes/FIAF, 2023).

Gordon discussed her biography of Ursula Parrott on several podcasts: Good Girl Confessional (Australia), A Life in Biography with Carl Rollyson, The Curious Professor, and the New Books Network.

JIM KNOWLES

Jim Knowles gave a paper titled “The Tree of Charity is Upside-Down: Timber-Framed Architecture and the Structure of Piers Plowman” at the International Piers Plowman Society conference, London, UK, July 6–8.

At the International Piers Plowman Society conference, London, UK, July 6–8, Jim Knowles, Paul Broyles, and Tim Stinson led a workshop on the Piers Plowman Electronic Archive. 

CHELSEA KRIEG

Chelsea Krieg’s poems “When My Therapist Asks If I Am Happy” and “Marriage Counseling Without Teeth” were published in New South Volume 15, Issue 1.

Her poetry manuscript, Everything is Water was runner-up in Hub City Press’s 2023 New Southern Voices Poetry Prize. 

JENNIFER NOLAN

This summer, Jennifer Nolan presented “‘Rags-Martin Jones,’ McCall’s, and the Prince of Wales” at the 16th International F. Scott Fitzgerald Society Conference in Växjö, Sweden. 

She also served as co-editor and wrote the introduction for The Complete Magazine Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald, 1921-1924, which was published by Edinburgh University Press in May 2023.

MARIA ROUPHAIL

Maria Rouphail has been selected by the North Carolina Poetry Society as one of three NC Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poets for 2024.

WILLIAM SHAW

In May, Bill Shaw published On the Run (Kilkenny Press), a historical novel set in Sligo at the height of the Troubles. It is available as a paperback and eBook through Amazon.

ELIZABETH WAGNER

Action, Spectacle published Elizabeth Wagner’s short story “With Cedar” in the Summer 2023 issue.

JOHN WALL

On June 14, John Wall presented “Managing the Recreation of Lost Space and Time: The Virtual St Paul’s Cathedral Project” on a panel on Project Management in the Humanities at the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI) Conference, held via Zoom at the University of Victoria.
