Graduate Student News for May & June 2023

David Palko has accepted a position in the PhD program in English at Duke University. This summer, he will attend the University of Virginia’s Rare Book School to participate in a seminar on Law Books: History and Connoisseurship, which will be held at Yale Law School. Palko presented a paper at the New Visions of Julian of Norwich conference last July at Somerville College, Oxford. He received a partial travel bursary from Oxford’s Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages to attend. Palko also received full funding to attend the Folger Shakespeare Library’s seminar An Orientation to Research Methods and Agendas, at Penn State University in May 2022. Most recently, he received a 2023 University-wide Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award.

Mackie Black will attend this year’s Folger Shakespeare Library seminar, An Orientation to Research Methods and Agendas, at the University of Pennsylvania on a full scholarship. She recently presented an invited paper, “Unheard Voices: Unrecorded Knowledge,” at the Renaissance Society of America Annual Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with travel funded by the English Department and the Graduate Student Association. Black was asked to report on the conference in a blog post for the Early Modern Recipes Online Collective. Most recently, her piece “Rebirth of Embodiment: Hand-Compiling an Early Modern Recipe Book” has been accepted for inclusion in the Spring edition of The Recipes Project.
