Donors Help Top Students Reach Their Potential

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences continues to grow as a destination college for talented, top-ranked students from across our state and beyond. Merit scholarships play a critical part in attracting and retaining such students. This year, CHASS awarded more than 100 merit-based scholarships across all its disciplines. A number of scholarship students were able to thank their donors at the college's 2014 Scholarship Luncheon.

NC Literary Festival: Treats Galore for Lit Lovers

Make plans now to attend the NC Literary Festival April 3 - 6 in and around the Hunt Library on NC State's Centennial Campus. Hear your favorite authors from across the university and across the country read from their work. Discuss genres ranging from poetry to cooking, fiction and science fiction. Take a workshop in bookmaking, comics or pop-up books. Fun for all ages. And it's free!

Maymester: One Course, Three Weeks, Three Credits

Last May, CHASS piloted Maymester, a three-week academic session that combines an intensive schedule with small class sizes to create an enriching and in-depth educational experience for professors and students alike. Based on positive feedback from faculty and students, the college has been asked to organize Maymester 2014.

When NC State recognized its outstanding undergraduate academic advisers recently, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences was well represented. Two of the five university employees who received awards for their efforts to support and encourage students were from CHASS. Congratulations to Linda Williams and Roy Stamper.

2014 Statewide Poetry Contest Underway

Calling all poets: The 2014 Statewide Poetry Contest is accepting entries. Sponsored by the NC State University Creative Writing program, the contest is one of the largest literary competitions in the region. This year's guest judge is acclaimed poet Li-Young Lee.

January Student of the Month

Brooke Wilner is a sophomore Caldwell Fellow and Benjamin Franklin Scholar, pursuing a degree in both English and Aerospace Engineering. She is involved with the Feed The Pack Food Pantry, Writing and Speaking Tutorial Services, and CSLEP's Leadership in Action program. She studied abroad at Oxford in Summer 2013.

November Student of the Month

Halle Mangrum is a sophomore majoring in English. She is a Caldwell Fellow who has been a Technician staff writer, a cast member of NC State's The Heidi Chronicles, and a member of student groups such as Habitat for Humanity. She currently enjoys working on short films and on her first novel.

CHASS 101 offers an orientation to the culture, resources, research methods, and interdisciplinarity of our unique college.
